Facebook’s owner, Mark Zuckerberg, has expressed frustration and concern over the rise of TikTok, a social media app that has gained immense popularity among younger generations. Despite the fact that TikTok’s creator, Zhang Yiming, was once a former employee of Facebook, Zuckerberg still sees the competition as a personal one.
WASHINGTON, DC – APRIL 10: Facebook co-founder, Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg testifies before a combined Senate Judiciary and Commerce committee hearing in the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill April 10, 2018 in Washington, DC. Zuckerberg, 33, was called to testify after it was reported that 87 million Facebook users had their personal information harvested by Cambridge Analytica, a British political consulting firm linked to the Trump campaign. In a leaked audio recording of a Facebook meeting in 2019, Zuckerberg expressed his views on TikTok. He began by noting that it was the first consumer internet product built by one of the Chinese tech giants that is doing quite well around the world. Furthermore, Zuckerberg likened the app to Facebook’s Explore Tab, which is a feature on its photo-sharing app, Instagram.
Zuckerberg also acknowledged that TikTok was becoming a formidable competitor. He described TikTok as an app that is almost like the Explore Tab for stories, but where that is the whole app. Moreover, he expressed his concern that TikTok’s growth is really scary, and that it is ahead of Facebook in a number of countries.
Zhang Yiming’s success with TikTok has clearly irked Zuckerberg, who sees the app as a major threat to Facebook’s dominance in the social media space. However, it’s worth noting that Facebook has faced similar challenges from other competitors in the past, such as Snapchat. In fact, Facebook tried to acquire Snapchat for $3 billion in 2013, but the offer was rejected. Zuckerberg subsequently launched Instagram Stories, which mimicked many of Snapchat’s features and helped to neutralize the threat posed by the rival app.
It remains to be seen whether Zuckerberg will be able to similarly counter TikTok’s growth, or whether Zhang Yiming’s app will continue to capture the attention of younger social media users. Regardless, the competition between the two companies is likely to remain fierce for the foreseeable future.
