A 21-year-old Georgia woman allegedly shot Demario Wilson, her “close friend,” on Tuesday due to an argument over $5.
According to reports, De’Ja Pierre-Ames and Wilson began arguing at an apartment complex located on Godby Road in College Park. During this conflict, Pierre-Ames allegedly shot and killed Wilson.
“This is very senseless,” said Monica Wilson, the victim’s mother, to WSB-TV. She recalled witnessing the shooting deaths of many Georgia youth and never imagining her son ever would be among them.
“Detectives have determined a verbal altercation over $5 took place prior to the shooting between the decedent and his close friend, De’Ja Pierre-Ames,” said College Park Police Department in a statement.
When officers arrived at the scene they found Wilson, 25, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead by the Fulton County Medical Examiner.
Pierre-Ames turned herself into the Fulton County police department two days later. Charged with murder, she is being held in the Fulton County jail, WSB-TV reports.
Asked how to decrease the amount of youth deaths to gun violence, the victim’s mother responded: “It’s going to take more men to be involved with the younger generation.”
Wilson was the oldest of seven children.
His family has organized a GoFundMe to raise $14,000 for his funeral. According to their post, his parents and relatives are “overwhelmed” with grief.
“He was loved by many and a beautiful light to everyone he came in contact with,” they wrote. “His family is appreciative of all your prayers, donations, and generosity during this difficult time.”
Gun violence kills more than 38,000 people in America annually, and it has become the leading cause of early death, the American Public Health Association reports.
